Den medelmåttige smågangstern Jerry Welbach funderar på att söka sig ett hederligt jobb. Först ska han dock göra ett sista uppdrag för maffian trots flickvännen, Samanthas, tjat om att "den rätta vägen är den smala vägen". Uppdraget går ut på att han ska korsa den södra gränsen och styra kosan mot hjärtat av Mexico för att hitta en ovärderlig revolver, kallad "the Mexican". Till sin förvåning upptäcker Jerry att han utan svårighet lyckas spåra upp vapnet. Revolvern är dock mytomspunnen och kringgärdad av vidskepelse och snart märker Jerry att lika lätt som det varit för honom att hitta vapnet, lika svårt är det att få revolvern med sig tillbaka till USA. Precis när han är nära att ge upp, dyker maffians egen kontraktsmördare upp och ger honom extra motivation! Yrkesmördaren har nämligen tagit Samantha som gisslan tills dess att revolvern är i maffians ägo.
